About Us

What is People First

People First is a self-advocacy organization composed of, ran by and existing for people with developmental disabilities. We are a registered not-for-profit 501c3 organization with the mission of improving the lives and promoting equality for all people with disabilities. Our members want to stress that joining People First is a great opportunity for individuals with disabilities to make new friends with people facing similar obstacles. We help each other overcome our problems, and together we form a network of individuals who help one another succeed.

Where and When do we Meet?

People First generally conducts monthly meetings on the 4th Saturday of every month at Paraquad in St. Louis. Regular monthly meetings take place from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Paraquad is the premier center for independent living in the region, and we are very fortunate to have the use of their wonderful auditorium for our meeting space. Our members have decided to make Paraquad our permanent place for monthly meetings because it is safe and comfortable, and especially because it is the most accessible and accommodating facility in St. Louis. Paraquad also has been gracious enough to provide us with transportation to and from meetings for those individuals with the greatest need.

What do we Do?

Our meetings focus on issues of the members' choosing. Topics can range from planning social events to planning advocacy events and strategies for particular pieces of local, state, and national legislation. We do not just work on policy, we also help members to become more involved in the community through various trainings. People First is a social group, as well as an advocacy group. Pushing legislation is obviously not for everyone, and there is a place for people who would just like to come and meet new friends. We have parties, dances, fundraisers, summer advocacy camp, and many other out of town trips where members bond and have fun. People First exists and has a place for literally every individual with a developmental disability.
